Waking Hours is the album that turned Del Amitri from a cult Scottish band into a major pop-rock force. Released in 1989, it sharpened the group’s folk-rock roots into compact, radio-ready songs built on Justin Currie’s dry wit, melodic basslines and Justin Hayward’s guitar-led arrangements. Produced by the band with Hugh Jones, it balances bite and polish across standout songs such as Kiss This Thing Goodbye, Kiss This Thing Goodbye and the enduring Nothing Ever Happens. The record helped define late-’80s British guitar pop with lyrics that were observant, human and faintly sardonic, giving Del Amitri the breakthrough they needed.
