On Through the Night is a sharp debut that helped Def Leppard bridge the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and mainstream hard rock. Released in 1980, it introduced the Sheffield band’s knack for lean riffs, big choruses and melodic polish, with Joe Elliott’s vocals fronting songs such as Rock Brigade and Wasted. The album was produced by Tom Allom, whose work gave the record a tight, urgent sound without losing its bite. Arriving at the peak of the NWOBHM movement, it established Def Leppard as one of the scene’s most accessible and ambitious new bands, setting the stage for their rapid rise.
