About this album
3 Feet High and Rising is De La Soul’s landmark debut and one of hip-hop’s most inventive opening statements. Released in 1989, the album broke from harder-edged rap trends with bright samples, surreal humour and a playful, highly musical approach that helped define alternative hip-hop. Working with producer Prince Paul, De La Soul turned songs like The Magic Number and Eye Know into a collage of wit, jazz-flavoured textures and left-field ideas, while still keeping the group’s conscious edge clear. Widely regarded as a classic, it expanded what mainstream rap could sound like and remains hugely influential on later generations of artists.
