Eat 'Em And Smile is David Lee Roth’s exuberant solo breakthrough, swapping Van Halen stadium gloss for sharper humour, harder riffs and a more flamboyant sense of fun. Issued in 1986, it teamed Roth with guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette, a line-up that gave the record its athletic, neo-classical edge. ‘Yankee Rose’ became a signature single, while covers like ‘Tobacco Road’ and ‘That’s Life’ underlined Roth’s knack for turning familiar material into a showpiece.
