About this album
Pinups is a smart, ferocious detour in David Bowie’s early-1970s run, recasting 1960s British rock and R&B favourites through his own glam persona. Released in 1973 and produced by Bowie and Ken Scott, the album was recorded in the wake of Ziggy Stardust and followed Bowie’s instinct for reinvention rather than repetition. Rather than treating the songs as nostalgia, he pushes them into brighter, rougher, more theatrical shapes, with standout versions of See Emily Play, I Can’t Explain and Sorrow showing how he could absorb his heroes and still sound unmistakably like himself. It reached No. 1 in the UK and remains one of his most characteristic oddments.
