I Love Country is a strong overview of David Allan Coe’s outlaw-country years, gathering some of his most hard-bitten and best-known material from the 1980s era. By this point Coe had built a reputation for songs that blurred the line between redneck humour, bruised confession and classic honky-tonk storytelling, and this compilation draws on that persona with real focus. Songs such as Willie, Waylon And Me, Now I Lay Me Down To Cheat and You Never Even Called Me By My Name helped define his renegade image while keeping one foot firmly in mainstream country craft. It is a compact reminder of why Coe remains one of the genre’s most distinctive outsiders.
