Voodoo is the landmark album that confirmed D’Angelo as one of modern R&B’s most original voices. Released in 2000, it fused soul, funk and hip-hop with a looser, deeply human feel, helped by a collective approach that drew on the Soulquarians circle and the playing of musicians such as Questlove and Pino Palladino. Built around patient grooves and songs like Untitled (How Does It Feel) and Devil’s Pie, the record became a defining statement of neo-soul, earning widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Its influence on contemporary soul and R&B has only grown since.
