Super Fly is Curtis Mayfield at his most incisive, turning a film soundtrack into a landmark statement of 1970s soul and Black urban commentary. Issued in 1972 for the Gordon Parks Jr. film, the album stands apart from the movie by matching sharp social observation with immaculate funk, studio polish and unforgettable melodies. Mayfield’s voice and guitar give the record its cool authority, while songs such as ‘Pusherman’ and ‘Freddie’s Dead’ helped define its enduring reputation. Widely regarded as one of the great soundtrack albums, it became a major success and a key document of socially conscious soul.
