Willy And The Poor Boys is Creedence Clearwater Revival at their sharpest, blending swampy blues-rock, rootsy rock and roll and John Fogerty’s plainspoken social commentary. Released in 1969, the album tightened the band’s sound while widening its reach, from the back-porch stomp of Down On The Corner to the protest edge of Fortunate Son and the folk-blues resonance of Cotton Fields. Built on Fogerty’s lean songwriting and the group’s tough, unadorned playing, it became one of the clearest statements of Creedence’s American voice and a key album in the late-1960s rock canon.
