    About this album

Free is a sharp, urgent alternative rock album that helped define Concrete Blonde’s late-1980s sound. Issued in 1989, it follows the band’s breakthrough with a tougher edge and a more focused sense of drama, built around Johnette Napolitano’s distinctive voice and Jim Mankey’s wiry guitar work. The album balances muscular rock with darker, reflective moments, giving songs like God Is A Bullet and Help Me real bite while keeping the melodies immediate. Free reinforced Concrete Blonde’s reputation for combining post-punk intensity with strong songwriting, and it remains one of their most recognisable records.
