Brian Eno coined and popularized the term "ambient music"—but he didn't invent the genre alone. His kindred spirits were the German musicians Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (of Cluster). It's pointless to speculate about who influenced whom; the idea of ambient music was simply in the air in the mid-1970s.
The fact is, Brian Eno attended a Cluster concert in Hamburg in 1975. He strategically positioned himself in the front row, and, as expected, was invited on stage for a jam session. After the concert, they arranged to meet, and this meeting took place in 1977. Eno and Cluster spent three weeks in Conny Plank's studio. Two albums emerged from this experience: "Cluster & Eno" and "After The Heat." The former is, without exaggeration, the first ambient album produced in Germany. "After The Heat," however, is something entirely different. While Cluster's signature style can be seen on »Cluster & Eno« (and Eno's ambient concept guides the hand), »After The Heat« is more of an Eno album with the stylistic features of Cluster's music.
