Because The Internet is Childish Gambino’s most ambitious early statement, expanding his rap roots into a dense blend of hip hop, R&B, funk and pop. Released in 2013, it marked a major step forward for Donald Glover as he sharpened his alter ego into a more cohesive and concept-driven artist, using the internet era’s noise, status anxiety and self-mythology as source material. Tracks such as 3005 and Sweatpants helped the album break through beyond his cult following, while its film-like sequencing and monologue fragments gave it a restless, cinematic flow. It is widely regarded as the record that cemented Childish Gambino as a serious album artist.
