Car Seat Headrest’s Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story returns to the band’s 2016 breakout Teens of Denial and rebuilds it as a more explicit character piece for the album’s 10th anniversary. Will Toledo originally used “Joe” as a stand-in for himself, partly as a nod to Daniel Johnston; here, that figure moves to the centre, turning a familiar coming-of-age record into a fuller narrative about youth, self-doubt and hard-won perspective.

Rather than simply revisiting the old tapes, Toledo and the band went back into the studio with original Teens of Denial producer Steve Fisk to rework the material from the ground up. The new version reportedly tweaks lyrics, reshapes arrangements and adds three new original songs, including “Optimistic Son” and “Joe Drives Again,” so the story lands with a clearer arc.
