Karajan’s account of Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 is a commanding reading of one of the Romantic repertoire’s most spectacular orchestral showpieces. Written in 1886 and nicknamed the “Organ Symphony”, the work is famous for its fusion of symphony, organ and orchestra, culminating in a monumental sound world that helped make it a concert-hall favourite. Here, the Berliner Philharmoniker provide the darkly polished orchestral weight expected of Karajan, while Pierre Cochereau’s organ part brings decisive power and drama. The piece remains one of Saint-Saëns’ best-known works and a favourite test of a symphony orchestra’s colour, balance and scale.
