Jonathan Bree's Don't Call It Love arrives as a 2026 double album for Lil' Chief Records, stretching his coolly theatrical pop across 17 tracks and pushing further into a dark, stylised world of desire, intimacy and performance. The record is presented as an erotic concept-driven work, and that framing matters: Bree's brooding baritone, cinematic instrumentation and orchestral arrangements are used here not just for atmosphere, but to sharpen the album's tension between seduction and detachment.
The music expands the shadowy language of his recent work with a distinctly '80s-leaning palette of sleek synth-pop, noir-pop and orchestral melancholy. Sources connect its mood to New Order and Siouxsie & The Banshees, though Bree's blend of detached romanticism and chamber-pop craft remains very much his own. The lead single Live To Dance, featuring Princess Chelsea, sets the tone with a sultry pulse, while the album also brings in collaborators from music, film, photography and dance, underlining how visual and performative this project is.
That visual dimension is built into the album's identity. The adults-only video for Live To Dance pays homage to Duran Duran's The Chauffeur, and Bella Filbey's image also forms the centerpiece of the cover art. For listeners who came to Bree through the refined melodrama of Pre-Code Hollywood or his longer arc from the Brunettes and Lil' Chief, this feels like a larger-scale statement: more elaborate, more overtly conceptual, and deliberately made to unfold over a full double-LP span.
