  • Glenn Branca's Lesson No. 1 arrived in 1980 as the first release on 99 Records and a defining early statement from New York's downtown art-punk scene. Coming after Branca's time in Theoretical Girls and The Static, it introduced his solo voice through two side-long pieces that pushed no wave toward something more structural, physical and hypnotic.

The title piece is the more immediately propulsive of the two, built from driving rhythm and interlocking guitar patterns that several sources place somewhere between Neu! and Philip Glass. That mix of repetition and momentum helps explain why this record still feels so alive: Branca was testing rock minimalism, but without sanding off its force. On the flip, Dissonance turns darker, adding keyboard, bass, drums and even sledgehammer to create a harsher industrial sprawl.

What makes Lesson No. 1 especially worth hearing is how clearly it points forward. This was Branca's first solo release, but it already mapped out ideas that would echo through Sonic Youth, Swans and plenty of later guitar experimentalists. Compact in format yet huge in implication, it's a sharp entry point into an artist who found new ways to make electric guitars sound both architectural and unruly.
