Bohren & Der Club of Gore – Sunset Mission (2xLP, Yellow Vinyl)

Bohren & der Club of Gore's Sunset Mission is the 2000 third album where the Mülheim group’s slow-burn sound came fully into focus. By this point the band had moved far from its roots in Germany’s hardcore and metal underground, shaping an instrumental style that feels suspended between noir jazz, ambient drift and doom-weighted patience. This was also the first Bohren album to feature saxophonist Christoph Clöser, whose playing became central to the record’s identity.

Across nine long pieces, Sunset Mission turns tenor sax, piano, bass and brushed drums into something hushed, cinematic and oddly absorbing. Clöser’s sax sits at the centre of tracks like “Prowler” and “Nightwolf,” while the band’s minimal motifs and careful pacing make the album feel less like a collection of songs than a single late-night atmosphere unfolding in slow motion. The music was recorded by Morten Gass at Dark Victory Studios, produced by the band, and mastered by Michael Schwalbe in Düsseldorf.

For many listeners, this is the Bohren record where their after-hours aesthetic truly crystallised: 73 minutes of instrumental music that leans more explicitly into jazz without giving up the group’s sense of stillness and menace. If later albums refined the formula, Sunset Mission is where the template was set.
