About this album
Early Music is a revealing compilation of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ formative years, gathering early ska and soul recordings that point towards their later reggae breakthrough. Issued in 1977, it documents the group before international fame, when Marley’s songwriting was still sharpening alongside the harmonies and tight rhythms of the Wailers. Songs such as Wings Of A Dove and It Hurts To Be Alone show how they absorbed American soul and Jamaican popular styles into a distinctive voice of their own. More than a stopgap release, it offers useful context for one of popular music’s most influential catalogues.
