The Times They Are A-Changin’ is one of Bob Dylan’s most uncompromising early statements, turning American folk into a direct vehicle for protest, grief and moral pressure. Issued in 1964, his third album pares the arrangements back to voice, guitar and harmonica, giving songs such as the title track, “Only a Pawn in Their Game” and “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” a cutting clarity. Less varied than its predecessor but more focused in purpose, the record helped confirm Dylan as a singular songwriter whose work could sound both topical and timeless. Its influence on protest music and folk rock has remained substantial.
