Oh Mercy marked a genuine creative renewal for Bob Dylan after a uneven run of 1980s albums. Released in 1989 and produced by Daniel Lanois, it brought a darker, more textured sound to Dylan’s writing, giving songs such as Man in the Long Black Coat, Most of the Time and Ring Them Bells a haunted urgency. The album is widely regarded as one of his strongest late-career statements, balancing blues, folk rock and hard-edged confession with a renewed sense of focus. Its critical reputation grew quickly, and it helped restore Dylan’s standing as a vital contemporary songwriter rather than a legacy act.
