Bob Dylan is a striking debut that announced one of popular music’s most distinctive voices. Released in 1962 on Columbia, it largely draws on traditional folk and blues material, but Dylan’s phrasing, harmonica and blunt vocal presence already set him apart from revivalist peers. The album includes early originals such as Song to Woody and Talkin’ New York, pointing towards the self-mythologising songwriter he would soon become. Though modest on release, it marked the start of a career that would reshape folk and rock through lyrical ambition, personal perspective and a refusal to stay within genre limits.
