Blur – The Magic Whip (Gold Vinyl, 10th Anniversary Edition)

Blur's The Magic Whip arrived in 2015 as the band's eighth studio album, built from an unexpected five-day burst of recording in Hong Kong after cancelled tour dates left them stranded there. It was their first studio album in 12 years, and the first fully recorded by the classic four-piece with Graham Coxon since 13. That unusual origin matters: the record carries the sensation of being dislocated in a huge modern city, with songs shaped by loneliness, anxiety and the glow of an unfamiliar skyline.

Rather than sounding like a simple reunion exercise, The Magic Whip turns that setting into the album's central mood. Damon Albarn's lyrics draw on alienation and urban unease, while the music moves easily between art-pop grooves, tender ballads and more off-centre textures. Tracks such as "Lonesome Street," "Ghost Ship" and "Pyongyang" show how Blur balance melodic immediacy with a more unsettled atmosphere, and songs including "There Are Too Many of Us" and "My Terracotta Heart" deepen the record's themes of crowding, distance and fragile relationships.

This 10th anniversary edition also explains why the album has become newly attractive on vinyl. Original cover designer Tony Hung has reworked the famous ice-cream image with gold foil and embossed details, giving the sleeve a sharper, more dystopian edge while keeping its bright visual identity intact. The album is newly presented as a half-speed mastered single gold disc, making this edition feel considered rather than merely commemorative.
