Autoamerican shows Blondie pushing new wave far beyond its punk roots, folding in disco, reggae, dub and pop with sharp commercial instinct. The band’s fifth studio album, released in 1980, followed the success of Parallel Lines and confirmed Debbie Harry and Chris Stein as stylists with real range, not just downtown provocateurs. ‘The Tide Is High’ and ‘Rapture’ became major international hits, with the latter helping bring rap into the pop mainstream. Its genre-crossing ambition and confident hooks made Autoamerican one of Blondie’s most adventurous and influential releases.
