Mob Rules is a sharp, heavy return to form from Black Sabbath, driven by Ronnie James Dio’s forceful vocals and Tony Iommi’s crushing guitar. Released in 1981, it followed the band’s successful reboot with Dio and pushed their sound into darker, more direct heavy metal territory after the acclaim of Heaven and Hell. Songs such as The Sign Of The Southern Cross and the title track show the group balancing atmosphere with brute power, while the album’s muscular production helped make it one of Sabbath’s most respected early-’80s records. It remains a key document of the band’s Dio era.
