Birdy’s Fire Within marked a crucial step in her career when it first arrived in 2013: after a debut built largely on covers, this second album presented 11 songs of predominantly original material and established Jasmine van den Bogaerde as a songwriter in her own right. The shift matters, because these songs keep the intimacy that made her early work connect while opening it out into a broader, more cinematic sound. Multi-platinum single “Wings” sits at the centre of that story, with “No Angel” and “Strange Birds” helping define the album’s enduring appeal.
What gives Fire Within its staying power is the balance between piano-led confession and fuller, band-shaped arrangements. Birdy’s voice remains the focus, but the record makes room for strings, atmospheric guitars and subtle percussion, moving easily between sparse ballads and more expansive production. It was recorded in part at Abbey Road Studios, and its long list of contributors, including Rich Costey, Dan Wilson, Ben Lovett, Jim Abbiss, Fraser T. Smith and Greg Wells, helps explain the range without blurring the album’s mood.
For listeners coming back to it now, Fire Within captures the moment Birdy moved beyond being known for interpretation and into a more self-defined style: melancholy, melodic and thoughtfully scaled up. This 2026 vinyl return is especially welcome because the album is described as appearing on vinyl again for the first time in 12 years.
