Birdy’s Birdy first appeared in November 2011, introducing Jasmine van den Bogaerde while she was still in her mid-teens and quickly establishing the piano-led, emotionally stripped-back style that made her breakthrough. Rather than a routine covers set, the album drew on then-contemporary indie and alternative songwriters including Bon Iver, The xx, Fleet Foxes, Phoenix, The Postal Service and The National, reshaping their songs around Birdy’s voice and sparse arrangements.
That approach is what gives the record its staying power. Her version of “Skinny Love” became the key early single, while “People Help the People” and “Shelter” helped define the album’s hushed, intimate mood. Across the record, producers Rich Costey, James Ford and Jim Abbiss keep the focus tight: piano, light orchestration and carefully reduced backdrops that let the performances do the work. The one original here, “Without a Word,” is especially worth noting, because it offered an early glimpse of Birdy as a songwriter rather than only an interpreter.
For this 15th anniversary return to vinyl, Birdy still feels like a sharp document of her opening chapter: a debut built from familiar songs, but made distinctive by how calmly and clearly she recast them in her own image.
