Turnstiles is the album that sharpened Billy Joel’s identity as a songwriter with something to prove. Issued in 1976, it followed his breakthrough and turned towards a more personal New York perspective, balancing brisk pop-rock with folk-inflected detail and piano-led storytelling. Working with producer Michael Stewart, Joel delivered some of his best-known writing here, including Say Goodbye to Hollywood, New York State of Mind and Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway). The record helped establish the blend of wit, melancholy and metropolitan imagery that would define his later career, and remains one of his most admired early albums.
