Billy Bragg & Wilco – Mermaid Avenue (2xLP)

Billy Bragg & Wilco’s Mermaid Avenue began in 1998 as an unusual collaboration with a deep folk-music backstory: previously unheard Woody Guthrie lyrics were set to new music by Bragg and Wilco, following a project initiated by Guthrie’s daughter Nora. Rather than treating the words like museum pieces, the album gives them fresh life through Bragg’s politically alert folk style and Wilco’s late-90s alt-country warmth. That approach helped make this first volume the defining entry in the series, and it went on to earn a Grammy nomination.

The record’s appeal is in how naturally these different voices meet. Guthrie’s writing moves easily between wit, tenderness and social observation, while the music keeps things open and human rather than reverential. “California Stars” became the best-known song to emerge from the sessions, and tracks such as “Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key” and “Ingrid Bergman” show how comfortably Guthrie’s words could live inside new arrangements a generation later. Natalie Merchant guests on two songs, adding another distinctive voice to the set.

More than a tribute album, Mermaid Avenue captures a genuine exchange between British folk songwriting, American roots rock and Guthrie’s unfinished work. If you come to it for the famous songs, you stay for the broader picture: a 15-track album that makes the case for Guthrie as playful, romantic and restlessly alive on the page.

• No other posthumous reconsideration has captured Guthrie in all his compelling contradictions as precisely or as affectionately as Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue did in 1998. - Pitchfork
