About this album

Lady Sings the Blues distils Billie Holiday’s late-period artistry into a searing set of jazz and blues standards. Issued in 1956, the album gathers some of Holiday’s signature material, including Strange Fruit, God Bless the Child and Trav'lin' Light, and underscores her gift for making familiar songs feel newly lived-in. By this stage, Holiday’s voice had become rougher and more fragile, but that only deepened the emotional weight of her phrasing. Blending swing-era poise with blues feeling, the record remains one of the clearest statements of her singular ability to turn personal pain into enduring song.
