About this album
Trafalgar finds the Bee Gees sharpening their gift for expansive, emotional pop into one of their strongest early-70s statements. Issued in 1971, the album balanced polished harmonies, orchestral sweep and sombre balladry with a newly serious lyrical tone, reflecting the group’s move beyond their late-60s pop breakthrough. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart became the centrepiece and one of their defining songs, while the rest of the record moves between intimate confession and dramatic, almost theatrical arrangement. Trafalgar helped establish the Bee Gees as more than hitmakers, showing their depth as composers and interpreters of melancholy pop.
