Alpha showed Asia refining the polished arena rock formula that made their name, with stronger songcraft and a cleaner, more confident sound than their blockbuster debut. Released in 1983, the album leans into glossy pop rock and symphonic touches, driven by the band’s melodic basslines, layered keyboards and immaculate harmonies. The single Don’t Cry became one of their best-known songs and helped carry the record’s commercial appeal, while The Smile Has Left Your Eyes reinforced the group’s gift for widescreen, emotionally direct hooks. Produced by Mike Stone and Asia, Alpha remains a key early-’80s example of accessible prog-influenced hard rock.
