About this album

Queen Of Soul presents Aretha Franklin at a formative stage, when her remarkable blend of gospel power, jazz phrasing and emotional control was already fully in place. Issued in 1968, this compilation gathers material from her pre-Atlantic years and highlights the stylish, standards-based side of her early recording career, with performances shaped by her church-rooted delivery and instinctive swing. Long before her breakthrough singles made her a global icon, Franklin was already demonstrating the authority and versatility that would earn her the title Queen of Soul. The album is an illuminating snapshot of an artist in transition, and of the wide musical range that made her legendary.
