Spring is a striking 1966 statement from Tony Williams, the drummer who helped redefine modern jazz as a leader. Recorded for Blue Note and issued under Anthony Williams, it sits at the point where hard bop, post-bop and freer improvisation begin to fuse into something more unsettled and contemporary. The quintet setting gives Williams room to drive the music with a restless sense of motion, while the writing balances strong themes with open-ended invention. Alongside pieces such as “Extras” and “Tee”, the album shows why Williams became one of the key figures in jazz’s mid-60s shift towards greater harmonic and rhythmic freedom.
