About this album
Straight From The Heart is one of Ann Peebles’ defining soul albums, a sharply written early-1970s statement that matches emotional honesty with Memphis poise. Issued in 1972, it features her most celebrated material from the Hi Records era, including the aching “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight” and the bruised “Trouble, Heartaches & Sadness”. Peebles’ voice is at once cool, wounded and commanding, giving the songs a rare mix of vulnerability and authority. Rooted in Southern soul and shaped by the Memphis studio sound, the album helped confirm her as one of the era’s most distinctive female singers.
