Angelo Badalamenti – Blue Velvet (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Angelo Badalamenti's Blue Velvet captures the moment a long creative partnership began: this was the first collaboration between Badalamenti and director David Lynch, created for Lynch's 1986 neo-noir mystery film Blue Velvet. Its importance goes beyond soundtrack duties alone, setting out the uneasy blend of romance, dread and dream logic that would return throughout their later work together.

What makes this album so distinctive is the way Badalamenti's orchestral score sits beside Lynch's carefully chosen pop songs. The original cues are haunting and intimate, from the brief, lush Main Title to the ominous Frank, while the soundtrack also folds in Roy Orbison's In Dreams and other vintage recordings that deepen the film's contrast between small-town nostalgia and something far darker underneath. The title itself comes from Bobby Vinton's 1963 hit, though the soundtrack's mood is very much its own.
