About this album
Evita is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s most celebrated stage-to-album breakthrough, turning Eva Perón’s rise and fall into a sharp, emotionally direct musical drama. Issued in 1976, the concept album helped establish the pair’s reputation beyond theatre, pairing Webber’s dramatic writing with Rice’s politically charged lyrics in a format built to travel well beyond the stage. Its best-known song, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, became an international hit and the work as a whole played a major role in bringing modern musical theatre into the mainstream of 1970s pop culture. The album remains one of the duo’s defining achievements.
