Back to Black is Amy Winehouse’s breakthrough soul classic, and one of the defining British albums of the 2000s. Released in 2006, it drew on 1960s girl-group and rhythm and blues traditions while turning them into something fiercely modern, with Winehouse’s candid writing and unmistakable voice at the centre. Working with producers including Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, she delivered songs such as Rehab, You Know I’m No Good and Love Is a Losing Game, balancing wit, heartbreak and self-knowledge. The album won widespread acclaim, topped charts in several countries and helped make Winehouse an international star.
