    Spiritual Unity is the landmark statement that put Albert Ayler among free jazz’s most radical voices. Recorded in 1964 and released in 1965, the trio set with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray strips jazz down to raw melody, collective intensity and spiritual urgency. Ayler’s thorny, hymn-like themes and explosive tenor playing turned pieces such as Ghosts into rallying cries for the emerging avant-garde. Long regarded as one of the key documents of the free jazz movement, the album helped expand the music’s emotional and expressive possibilities well beyond conventional form.
