About this album

Volume IV finds Ahmad Jamal refining the poised trio approach that helped make him one of jazz’s most influential pianists. Recorded in 1958, the album captures his crisp touch, careful use of space and rhythmic control in a bop-rooted setting that still feels remarkably modern. Rather than pushing volume, Jamal builds tension through dynamics and phrasing, giving standards and familiar material a fresh sense of shape and surprise. As part of the early Chicago period that established his reputation, the record helped define the elegant, understated style admired by later hard bop and cool jazz players alike.
