Pump is the album that reasserted Aerosmith as a major hard rock force at the end of the 1980s. Released in 1989, it paired the band’s snarling blues-metal attack with a more polished studio sheen, helping turn their late-decade comeback into a commercial and critical success. The album spawned some of Aerosmith’s best-known songs, including Love in an Elevator, Janie’s Got a Gun and What It Takes, which broadened their audience without dulling the band’s swagger. Its mix of riff-heavy muscle, pop instincts and Steven Tyler’s elastic vocals made Pump one of the group’s defining records.
