  • AC/DC's Powerage arrived in 1978, right at the point where the band were sharpening their early sound into something leaner, tougher and more song-focused. It was also the album that gave them their first European hit with “Rock ’n’ Roll Damnation”, a useful marker for how far this Australian group had travelled by the late 70s. Alongside the brute-force charge people expect from AC/DC, Powerage is often singled out for the extra weight in the writing, with hard-luck narratives and a more deliberate sense of build on songs like “Down Payment Blues.”

There is plenty of pure attack here, of course: “Riff Raff” and “Sin City” remain two of the clearest examples of how AC/DC could make simple components feel huge, with Angus and Malcolm Young locking riffs into the rhythm section’s steady, pounding groove. Source material also points to this record as a step forward in songwriting, balancing the band’s usual immediacy with a little more tension and restraint. That mix helps explain why Powerage has long had a special reputation among listeners who prefer Bon Scott-era AC/DC at their rawest and most finely tuned.

This 2024 AC/DC 50 edition brings the album back on limited Gold Nugget Vinyl as part of the band’s 50th-anniversary catalogue campaign. The anniversary context matters: each copy includes new AC/DC 50 artwork as a 12” x 12” print, turning this pressing into a nicely considered celebration of one of the key records from the band’s pre-Highway to Hell run.
