Yusef Lateef (1921-2013) was a prominent American jazz musician and composer. He is best known for his pioneering use of world music elements in his compositions and performances. Lateef was a multi-instrumentalist, playing flute, saxophone, oboe, percussion, and many other instruments. He was also an accomplished composer, writing both jazz and classical music.

Lateef's best-known jazz albums include Eastern Sounds (1961), Cry! - Tender (1962), and Yusef Lateef's Detroit (1965). These albums are notable for their use of world music influences, such as Indian and Middle Eastern sounds, combined with traditional jazz. Standout songs from these albums include "Love Theme from Spartacus," "Blues for the Orient," and "The Plum Blossom."

An interesting fact about Lateef is that he was one of the first jazz musicians to incorporate a spiritual element into his music. He was also a spiritual teacher and practiced Sufism, an Islamic mysticism. He wrote several books on spirituality, including Music and the Soul (1976).
