USA For Africa, or United Support of Artists for Africa, was founded in 1985 by music producer Ken Kragen. It was created in response to the severe famine and poverty that plagued Ethiopia in the early 1980s. The organization raised funds and awareness for famine relief in Africa through a variety of fundraising efforts, including their 1985 single, “We Are the World.” This single, which was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, was sung by a host of top musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, and Ray Charles.

USA For Africa released their debut album, We Are the World, in 1985. This album featured the title track, as well as other songs such as “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, “Hands Across America”, and “Tears Are Not Enough”. The album was a huge success, selling more than 15 million copies worldwide and winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1986.

In addition to their debut album, USA For Africa has released several other albums, including a live concert album, a tribute album to Michael Jackson, and a 25th anniversary edition of We Are the World.

An interesting fact about USA For Africa is that the organization has raised more than $300 million for famine relief since its formation. This money has been used to support initiatives such as food banks, educational programs, and medical care. USA For Africa has also been a vocal advocate for ending hunger and poverty in Africa.
