Tony Orlando

Tony Orlando is an American singer and producer best known for his band Dawn's pop hits in the 1970s. Born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis in 1944, he was a child actor and teen idol before becoming a producer for CBS Records. He formed Dawn in 1970 with singers Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. Their first hit was “Candida” in 1970, followed by a string of successful songs such as “Knock Three Times”, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree”, and “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You)”.

Dawn's most successful album was 1973's Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree, which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold. Other standout albums include 1973's Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando, 1975's To Be with You, and 1976's Skybird.

In addition to his work with Dawn, Orlando released several solo albums and singles throughout his career, including the 1981 Top 40 hit “Heaven On Earth (So Fine)”.

An interesting fact about Tony Orlando is that he was the first artist to have a simultaneous release of an album and a feature-length movie. The movie, also titled Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree, was released in 1973 and featured a soundtrack of Dawn's music.
