The Jesus and Mary Chain are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in East Kilbride, Scotland in 1983. The band was formed by brothers Jim and William Reid, and consists of various members over the years, including bassist Douglas Hart, drummer Bobby Gillespie, and guitarist Ben Lurie.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's breakthrough album, Psychocandy (1985), was an immediate success and is often credited with pioneering the alternative rock genre. The album featured their signature sound of blending noise and melody, and included the singles "Just Like Honey", "Some Candy Talking" and "Never Understand".

Darklands (1987) was the band's second album and was described by critics as a "moodier and more contemplative" record. The album featured the singles "April Skies" and "Happy When It Rains".

The band's third album, Automatic (1989), featured the singles "Head On" and "Blues From a Gun", and is often considered their most successful album.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's fourth album, Honey's Dead (1992), featured the single "Reverence", which became the band's most successful single, reaching #9 on the UK Singles Chart.

The band has since released two more albums, Munki (1998) and Damage and Joy (2017), and have continued to tour and release singles.

An interesting fact about The Jesus and Mary Chain is that they have been cited as an influence by a wide range of artists, from The Pixies and Nirvana to My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream.
