Sviatoslav Richter was a Russian classical pianist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He was born in 1915 in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, and began playing the piano at age four. He studied at the Kiev Conservatory and graduated in 1938. Throughout his career, Richter performed and recorded a wide range of classical music, including works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Prokofiev, Schubert, Scriabin, and Tchaikovsky.

Richter's most acclaimed albums include his 1960 recording of Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations" and his 1967 recording of Prokofiev's "Piano Sonatas Nos. 6, 7 and 8". He also recorded several of his own transcriptions of Bach's organ works for the piano. Among Richter's most beloved songs are his recordings of Prokofiev's "Piano Sonata No. 7", Chopin's "Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor", and Bach's "Goldberg Variations".

An interesting fact about Richter is that he was an accomplished improviser and often improvised during concerts. He also had a vast repertoire, performing and recording works from all eras of classical music, from the Baroque to the 20th century.
