Sir Adrian Boult (1889–1983) was an English conductor and composer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was knighted in 1937 for his service to music and is remembered for his innovative approach to conducting and for his influence on the development of British orchestral music.

Boult made numerous recordings throughout his career, many of which are still available today. His recordings with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which he conducted from 1945 to 1950, are especially notable. Among his most celebrated recordings are his interpretations of Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Symphony No. 5.” His recordings of works by Gustav Holst, Richard Strauss, and Sergei Prokofiev are also highly acclaimed.

Boult was also known for his interpretations of music by the English composers William Walton and Benjamin Britten. He conducted the premieres of Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” and Walton’s “Belshazzar’s Feast,” both of which remain among his best-known recordings.

An interesting fact about Boult is that he was the first person to record The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.” He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra for the recording session in 1967.
