The band was founded in 1996 by Gabriel Roth and Philippe Lehman, and is composed of Sharon Jones (lead vocals), Binky Griptite (guitar), Homer Steinweiss (drums), Bosco Mann (bass), Neal Sugarman (tenor saxophone), and Saundra Williams (backing vocals).

The band's standout albums include Soul Time! (2002), Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007), I Learned the Hard Way (2010), and Give the People What They Want (2014).
