Sahib Shihab (born Edmund Gregory, November 18, 1923 – September 17, 1989) was an American jazz saxophonist and flautist. Born in Pensacola, Florida, he moved to Milwaukee at the age of nine. He attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and began his career in jazz in the early 1940s, playing in a band led by trumpeter Gerald Wilson. Shihab's first album as a leader was Jazz Sahib, released in 1956. It featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Walter Bishop Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. His best-known album is probably Jazz Sahara, released in 1959. It featured a cover of "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise", which became a jazz standard. Other standout albums include The Jazz We Heard Last Summer (1957), Sahib's Jazz Party (1958), and After Hours (1961). In addition to his work as a leader, Shihab also played on a number of classic recordings by other jazz greats, including Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Quincy Jones. An interesting fact about Sahib Shihab is that he was the first jazz saxophonist to record in stereo. His 1960 album Stereo-Jazz was recorded using the then-new stereo technology.
