Phil Woods was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Born in 1931, Woods became interested in jazz music at an early age, and began studying saxophone at the age of 15. He eventually went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York City, and soon after, in 1953, he joined the Army Band, which allowed him to hone his skills as an arranger and composer. After his service, Woods began performing in various jazz clubs around New York City.

Woods' discography includes over 100 albums as a leader or co-leader, many of which have become considered classics of the genre. Some of Woods' standout albums include "Rights of Swing" (1960), "Alto Madness" (1962), "Pairing Off" (1964), "The New Phil Woods Album" (1978), and "Farewell" (2009). Notable songs from Woods' discography include "Anthropology," "Joy Spring," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Hallelujah Time."

An interesting fact about Phil Woods is that he was one of the few jazz musicians to have a successful career in the mainstream, appearing on such popular television shows as "The Cosby Show" and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." He also made appearances in films such as "Round Midnight" (1986) and "The Cotton Club" (1984).
